Leipzig – city of music, trade fair city, city of books
Whether it’s a city of music, a trade fair city or a city of books – Leipzig has been an important centre of Europe for centuries, making it one of the liveliest and most dynamic cities in Germany.
Philosophers such as Leibniz, Nietzsche and Bloch have influenced the city’s thinking to this day. Famous poets such as Lessing, Klopstock, Gottsched and Goethe were drawn here. Leipzig is particularly famous throughout the world for its musicality. The city is characterised by a long tradition that goes back to the life and musical work of Bach and Mendelssohn Bartholdy in particular.
Art, science and culture are also reflected today in the city founded in 1165: several thousand scientists work at almost 20 non-university research institutions, at the university and six other colleges. The Thomaner Choir, the Gewandhaus Orchestra, the many museums and a lively theatre scene characterise the city’s cultural life. The ‘Leipzig School’ and the ‘cotton mill’ are leaders in the world of art.
After the peaceful revolution, Leipzig was able to develop into one of the most diverse regions in East Germany and is now experiencing a comeback as a logistics and technology centre in the heart of Europe. Today, Leipzig is characterised by economic dynamism, a high level of culture, many green oases and, last but not least, an outstanding quality of life.
